FEAview is optimized for speed on Pentium IV processors. If you
intend to do larger models ( ~= 5,000 elements, ~= 10,000 nodes), we recommend that you
have a Pentium IV processor, at least 512 Mb of memory, and please note the items
about a graphics card and monitor in the table below.
| Pentium III |
|
Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, ( 2000, 2003, 95, 98, and Me Not supported.)
The Windows XP version has some minor GUI problems. |
| Must
have a OpenGL compatible graphics card. Expensive cards
are not necessary. For example, nVidia RIVA TNT2 cards
are low-end, inexpensive, and adequate. Some inexpensive cards have color problems. If you have similar problems, I recommend that you upgrade to a better ATI or nVidia card.
Almost all computers manufactured
in the last two or three years have adequate
graphics cards. |
| 1024 x 768 minimum but 1280 x 1024
is recommended. |
| At least 14". 17"
recommended. The GUI is more flexible than it was and, with Windows 7, about any
size of monitor can be supported with the appropriate graphics card. |
| 128 Mb |
Here
are some rough guidelines for the number of nodes and
elements that different processors can display without
mouse operations getting sluggish:
| CPU speed 700 Mhz,
128 Mb memory |
Windows 2000 |
1000 CHEXA elements
1500 nodes |
| CPU speed 1000 Mhz,
256 Mb memory |
Windows 2000 |
5000 CHEXA elements
8000 nodes |
| CPU speed
2.4 Ghz, 512Mb memory |
Windows XP |
50,000 CHEXA elements
80,000 nodes |
| CPU speed 3.6 Ghz, 2.0Gb memory (not Xeon) |
Windows XP Professional |
648,000 CHEXA elements*
1,042,000 nodes |
*128 copies of the largest model I could find in my Nastran distribution.
This table is academic if you're using FEAview with an student
version of MSC.Nastran™ since that version is (or was) limited
to 1,000 nodes and 500 elements.
