History

FEAview has its roots in commercial aircraft structural analysis. The original program, written in about 1990, was a post-processor for Nastran and for Dassault Avion's Elfini. That program interfaced with several other engineering applications. It ran on Unix workstations. Nastran and post-processing code ran on a Cray Y-MP. Elfini and post-processing code ran on IBM mainframes.

FEAview began as a project to modernize that program and to add a few modeling capabilities. FEAview is a Windows C++ program that uses OpenGL for graphics.

FEAview version 3.0 is a project to adapt FEAview to Windows Vista and Windows 7, to fix problems, and look at future directions.
